How to find out if you were selected for the waitlist: Applicants may verify if they were selected by logging in with their user ID and password at www.waitlistcheck.com within 30 calendar days after the closing date. You must remember your unique code and your password. If your status says ACTIVE that means your pre-application is on the Wait List. If your status says INACTIVE, that means your application is not on the waitlist. We hope to re-open the waitlist annually depending on how quickly HCV vouchers turn over, and how quickly we are able to go through the waitlist pre-applications.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DOES THE HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER PROGRAM WORK?
Applicant families are selected from the waitlist and determined eligible. Eligible families select a suitable rental unit. After passing a HQS (Housing Quality Standard) Inspection, SHA establishes a HAP (Housing Assistance Payment) contract. Through this contract SHA will make rental subsidy payment to the owner on the family’s behalf. The family also pays a portion of the rent based on the household income.
HOW DO I GET A VOUCHER?
You must be selected from the SHA Housing Choice Voucher Program Waiting List and determined eligible.
The waitlist is currently closed, unless you have a preference, but will reopen from March 25, 2024 at 7am, to March 31, 2024 at 11pm.
ALL applications MUST be submitted electronically/duplicate applications will not be accepted.
Applicants must have an active email account. Applicants in need of an email address may obtain a free email account through a provider of their choice.
WHAT IF I NEED ASSISTANCE TO COMPLETE AN APPLICATION?

WHAT IF I DO NOT HAVE A COMPUTER?
Applicants may apply during the application period using any computer, tablet, or mobile device connected to the internet. Applicants may apply from the convenience of their home at any time. Applicants needing access to a computer or the internet may use a computer at any branch of their local Public Library.
IS THERE A COST TO RECEIVE A VOUCHER?
No. Please do not pay money to anyone or provide your personal information to persons claiming to represent the Syracuse Housing Authority (SHA). SHA does not charge or accept a fee for any service provided to our applicants, participants, or landlords. If you are approached by anyone who requests a fee for any service that SHA provides, that person is a scam artist and is not acting on behalf of SHA.
WHEN WILL THE 2024 SHA HCV WAITING LIST BE FINALIZED?
The SHA 2024 HCV Waitlist will open on March 25, 2024 starting at 7am and close on March 31, 2024 at 11pm.
SHA will do a random lottery selection and 3,500 applicants will be selected for placement on the Housing Choice Voucher Waitlist. Those selected in the lottery will receive an active status. Those NOT selected will receive a non-active status. Status updates will be available after 30 days. To check your status please visit www.waitlistcheck.com.

I DID NOT RECEIVE A NOTICE REGARDING MY STATUS ON THE WAITING LIST, WHO DO I CONTACT?

MY APPLICATION WAS SELECTED IN THE LOTTERY. HOW DO I KNOW WHERE I AM ON THE WAITING LIST?
Being on the waiting list does not mean that you will receive a voucher right away or that housing assistance is immediately available. SHA cannot predict how long you will be on the waiting list before your application is selected. The waiting list selection is based on the level of available funding and the turnover rate of the HCV Program.
MY APPLICATION WAS NOT SELECTED IN THE LOTTERY. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHEN CAN I GET A VOUCHER?
If you were not selected, your application is not being considered for SHAs HCV waitlist. You will need to reapply when the list reopens. SHA does not know when the Housing Choice Voucher Program Waiting List will be re-opened. SHA Vouchers are only available through the SHA HCV Waiting list. If you are approached by someone advising you to purchase a SHA voucher – that person is a scam artist and is not acting on behalf of SHA.

SHA will open the waiting list on March 25, 2024 at 7am and close on March 31, 2024 at 11pm.

IF I HAVE APPLIED TO ONE HOUSING AGENCY’S WAITING LIST, MAY I APPLY TO ANOTHER OPEN WAITING LIST?
Yes. You may apply to more than one waiting list.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MY NAME REACHES THE TOP OF THE WAITING LIST?
SHA will send you a letter by U.S. postal service and/or email requesting you complete the formal eligibility process. Once the information is verified and if you are determined eligible to participate in the program, a voucher will be issued. If you do not respond to these letters, your name will be removed from the waiting list. SHA will make two attempts to contact you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY NAME IS SELECTED FROM THE WAITING LIST AND I DID NOT RECEIVE MY ELIGIBILITY NOTICE AND MISSED MY APPOINTMENTS?
You will be given two opportunities to attend a HCV Program eligibility briefing. If you miss these appointments, your name will automatically be withdrawn from the waiting list. You may reapply when the waiting list reopens.
WHEN AND HOW DO I CHANGE MY CONTACT INFORMATION WITH SHA?
You must maintain your log-in information used during setup. If you have any changes to your contact information, you may log into the SHA Applicant Portal link provided in your confirmation. You may also visit the SHA website at www.syracusehousing.org to access the Applicant Portal. SHA does not provide status updates or make changes to applicant information by phone.
You are required to keep your contact information up-to-date and should update your information with SHA of changes in a timely manner.
MAY I APPEAL THE DECISION TO BE REMOVED FROM THE WAITING LIST IF I MISSED MY APPOINTMENTS?
No. There is no appeal process for missed appointments when on the Housing Choice Voucher Program Waiting List. You may reapply when the waiting list reopens.
